2. Understand the Three Business Models First

  • Stock traders: mainly sell steel by tonnage and usually do not fabricate to drawings.
  • Job-shop fabricators: cut, assemble, weld, straighten, blast and pack to your drawings; a good fit when drawings are already complete.
  • Detailing-plus-fabrication plants: model and produce shop drawings first, then fabricate; the better choice when your drawings are incomplete or need detailing support.

Before requesting quotes, decide where you are: with complete drawings, compare job-shop fabricators; with only a concept or preliminary design, prioritise a plant that can detail and fabricate in one place.

3. A Three-Step Shortlist

Step one: check the basics online. Verify the business licence and that steel fabrication is within scope; confirm a quality management certificate (such as ISO 9001) is current; ask for an equipment list, real workshop photos and similar project references, and check whether the references match your project type.

Step two: talk to the supplier. Ask four questions directly: do you fabricate to drawings and support detailing? Can you provide material certificates and inspection reports? Can galvanising, coating and third-party inspection be arranged? Is lead time based on a drawing review rather than a verbal promise?

Step three: verify on site or by video. Visit if you can; otherwise ask for a live video walkthrough of the key workshop processes, not just the office or a showroom.

4. What to Check On Site

  • Cutting area: laser, plasma or flame cutting machines in production, and material stacks with grade markings.
  • Assembly and welding: welder qualifications and welding procedure specifications (WPS/PQR), and a proper inspection station.
  • Straightening and blasting: straightening equipment, blasting machines and surface preparation grade control.
  • Finished goods: member marking, packing and container-loading plans, and ready-to-ship items you can inspect.
  • Office side: drawing/BOM management, inspection records and QC staffing.
