1. What Anchor Bolts Do

Anchor bolts are embedded in concrete foundations to fix steel column bases, transferring uplift and shear and providing erection alignment. Selection depends on the column base detail, loads and foundation practice; drawings normally specify the form, size and embedment depth.

2. Common Forms

  • J-type: one end bent into a J shape for anchoring and uplift resistance; one of the most common forms;
  • Hook form: a larger bend angle and longer anchorage, used where higher uplift resistance is needed;
  • L-type: one end bent into an L to help tie into foundation reinforcement during placement;
  • Straight-thread / doubled-end: a straight shank threaded at both ends, used with nuts;
  • Bearing-plate form: a base plate or sleeve welded near the root for more stable anchorage, common in heavy or special foundations.

3. How to Choose a Form

Follow the column base drawing and structural design: typical column bases use J-type or L-type; higher uplift or anchorage needs may call for hook or bearing-plate forms; adjustable positions can use sleeves or reserved holes. The form affects how the bolt ties into foundation reinforcement, so do not substitute forms without confirming the drawings.

4. Material and Finish

Common grades are Q235B and Q355B; high-strength or special cases follow the drawings. Common finishes include black, hot-dip galvanized and blackened; whether the embedded segment needs corrosion protection and the exposed segment galvanizing depends on project requirements. Material certificates and dimensional inspection records are available.

5. What to Submit When Enquiring

  • Column base drawing or anchor bolt plan (form, size, embedment depth);
  • Material and strength requirements;
  • Finish requirements (black / hot-dip galvanized, etc.);
  • Quantity and accessories (nuts, washers);
  • Destination and delivery date.
